What is Angelina Jolie’s Body Type?
I have determined her to be a Flamboyant Natural.
This post is a detailed account of how I got to this conclusion. I’ll be focusing on the lines of her body and clothes as well as her essence.
The basis of this analysis is primarily the Kibbe system of body typing, and secondarily the Kitchener system for understanding essence. These systems are unique and independent, but I like to use them together. Please keep in mind that I’m no expert and these are just my thoughts. Anyway, let’s begin.
Let’s take a look at the lines of Angelina’s Body:
Angelina is definitely frame dominant. Her frame is both long and sturdy, meaning she has both length and width. Notice her broad shoulders and long limbs. Atop that structure, she has some lean flesh. However, notice how it’s not sinewy, just lean and tending to musculature.
She also has some softness; the full lips, defined waist, and ample bosom. Still, her structure is the most dominant feature.
Angelina has an athletic build which is easier to see in these images and which is why she played the Lara Croft character so well. It’s easy to believe that she is strong, fierce, and capable.
Elongation/ Vertical Line
Angelina has a long vertical line. Her frame is elongated and it affects the way that fabric falls on her body. She looks better as the garments get longer; in these she looks, she looks her best in the last image (right).
Flamboyant Naturals fall between Dramatics and Naturals, so it’s interesting to see how Angelina looks in both these lines.
The first look (left) is purely Dramatic with the sharp lines and edges, and heavy, stiff fabric. This coat is too stiff for her and she looks so rigid and even caged in it. As the fabric and edges soften in the middle image, Angelina looks much more harmonious. The middle coat is also more fitted and even tapers in at the waist which suits her as she has a defined waist.
The last look (right) is the best as the fabric is weighted and has some sharp edges, which matches her strong bone structure. However, the fabric isn’t stiff and it allows for movement and body contouring (in a way that the first coat doesn’t), added to that, the belt cinches her at the waist which gives her the waist definition that looks so good on her.
These are additional examples of why this is Angelina’s perfect coat recipe: weighted but supple fabric; narrow but relaxed silhouette; neutral color palette, and a cinched waist. She looks great in all these outfits and in each of them, the coat is the star.
Naturals look great in casual outfits. So, we would expect Angelina to be right at home in these relaxed denim looks.
This is definitely the case here. These outfits are technically elevated casual as she’s wearing heels and her general styling is polished, however, denim is overwhelmingly casual so I feel these looks still work for this analysis.
Angelina looks great here and because of how polished her styling is, she actually doesn’t look super casual. She looks relaxed yet sophisticated. Jeans on a different type, like Romantic for example, would still look very casual even with the polished styling, but for Natural types, they can quickly be elevated.
These looks are more truly casual and, again, she looks great. The relaxed lines of the sweaters/ shirt and the denim create a laid back and harmonious outfit on her.
Casual: Classic Essence
I think Angelina has a combination of essences, one of which is Classic. So, she looks great in clean, simple, elevated styles which happens to be her go to style.
These looks work great particularly because they are not only Classic but also Natural (which I see as her dominant essence). They are loose and flowy, which is Natural, but also Classic in style and design. She looks very harmonious.
Formal: Classic Essence
Here again, these Classic styles look great on her. These looks are more formal and they lean more Dramatic in lines with the narrow, streamlined silhouettes which she can definitely pull off. She looks great.
Tight vs. Loose
As much as she has Dramatic leaning body structure, Angelina is not a Dramatic. I think these images show that clearly and make a deeper case for her being a Flamboyant Natural.
The tight silhouettes to the left are rather restrictive on her. She doesn’t look bad, she can pull off these Classic-Dramatic lines, but she doesn’t look harmonious.
In the looser and more flowy Classic-Natural silhouettes to the right, she looks much better, more harmonious, and much more…well, natural. Just that little bit of space between her and the garments creates the sense of movement that’s so important for Natural types.
Shapeless vs. Body Hugging
Angelina has a naturally defined waist, so her best lines mimic this. She looks much better in the images to the right where the garments are fitted to her body and her shape is visible.
In the images to the left, the looser, shapeless garments do nothing to accentuate her shape and are thus not as flattering. A long and narrow silhouette with a cinched in waist is her best.
Here are some examples of these long and narrow silhouettes with a cinched in waist. She looks amazing in each of these looks, they draw on all of her essences and she looks perfectly harmonious.
The silhouettes of the dresses do lean Dramatic, but this is still harmonious with Angelina because she is a Dramatic-leaning Flamboyant Natural. So, she can pull off both Dramatic and Natural lines as long as she honors her essences.
These are not Angelina’s best lines or silhouettes. These dresses are too soft and feminine on her.
The first (left) and middle looks are particularly unflattering on her because the fabrics are too delicate, light, and completely lacking in structure. These would be better suited to a Romantic type. The result is that she looks hard in these looks because their softness contrasts her bone structure so much.
The last look (right) is the best of these because the fabric is heavier (compared to the others), and the silhouette is narrow and fitted to her body. The print is very delicate and feminine, but she can handle that as she does have some Romantic essence.
So this last look (right) is beautiful on her because it honors her Romantic essence while also honoring her structural needs.
Flared skirts are not flattering on Angelina. They disturb her long, narrow silhouette by adding width to her lower half and it doesn’t flatter her at all. All of these looks have an excess of fabric in the skirts and they are imbalanced with her body structure.
A Fabric Weight + Fit Study
These long black dresses provide a great comparison of how different lines look on Angelina.
The first look (left) is the least flattering on her. The fabric is too soft and unstructured and the fit is too loose. So, the dress just hangs off her in an unflattering way. There is also a lot of fabric whose draping as it falls creates a widish silhouette, which isn’t the best for her.
The middle look is better than the first by far. The dresses are actually very similar, but the second one is more fitted to her body and that narrows the silhouette and makes it so much flattering on her. However, the draping of the fabric and the lack of structure are still not ideal for her, and the fabric still feels a bit too soft for her.
In the last look (right), the fabric is heavy and structured and this visually supports her bone structure. However, I do think it’s too heavy and stiff (Dramatic) for her. She can definitely pull it off, it’s just not her best lines. She’s missing the flow/ movement (Natural) aspect and it feels restrictive on her.
Purely Flamboyant Natural Lines
Wide + Unconstructed
These dresses are too wide for Angelina. The loose unconstructed styles are great, but the wide silhouettes don’t flatter her. Remember her frame is Dramatic-leaning which means it’s narrow, so her best lines will mimic that. While her structure can handle these outfits, she’s not drowning in fabric, they are shapeless and widening.
These outfits are similar, they are both made of long lines and the fit is loose and spacious. However, the key difference is the fabric weight and structure. The first look (left) is too lightweight and it offers no structure. This is not harmonious with Angelina’s strong bone structure.
The second look (right) is made of a heavier fabric that offers more structure and keeps its shape. This is more harmonious with Angelina and she looks much better in the second look (right) than the first (left).
These outfits are Dramatic because of the long, straight lines; the stiff or heavier fabric; and the narrow silhouettes. Angelina looks very good in these looks; they support and compliment her structure, however, they are not her absolute best.
She looks good but restricted. The Natural part of her body type and essence are not accommodated in these looks and as such, there is something vital missing from them to animate her in the most complete and harmonious way.
Purely Romantic Lines
These dresses are Romantic because of their body-hugging nature, the delicate fabrics and trims, and the glamorous styling. Angelina looks off in these looks.
While she does have a Romantic essence, it’s a minor essence for her and this doesn’t allow her to pull of predominantly Romantic looks. She needs them to also have the more grounding effect of her more dominant Natural essence.
In comparison, notice how someone with a more dominant Romantic essence, Amal Clooney, looks in a similar dress. She looks amazing and perfectly harmonious in the tiered tassel dress. On Angelina, it looks too dainty on her and there is a separation between it and her that I don’t see on Amal.
Natural + Romantic
Here we see how much more harmonious Angelina looks when she honors both her Romantic and Natural essences.
These dresses are long and flowy which satisfies the Natural requirements. The dresses are also made from soft and delicate fabric and it drapes softly around her body, which satisfies the Romantic requirements.
Arguably, the yellow dress and styling of the first look (left) is more Romantic than the second look (right) which leans more Soft Natural, but they both have a strong Romantic softness and long flow to them.
Angelina looks good in these looks, but something of her depth is lost. She needs a little bit more structure to be fully harmonious.
Dramatic + Romantic
These looks combine the Dramatic elements of a long vertical line and heavier, structured fabric with sharp edges (left, middle) and Romantic elements of a body-hugging silhouette (left, right), glamorous, high-sheen fabric (left, right), and glamorous jewelry.
This is a wonderful combination on Angelina and she looks amazing in each of these looks. The third look (right) leans more Romantic than the others because of the ornate fabric and, while beautiful, it’s the least flattering on her.
She looks her best when she first honors the Dramatic/ Natural aspect of her Flamboyant Natural body type that requires structure and weight, and then her Romantic essence.
Let’s Consider The Opposite
These dresses are long, loose, and drapey. They also offer waist accentuation via belts that cinch in in a way that cuts off her vertical rather than structurally (as the more Dramatic looks above) .
These are not Angelina’s best lines. The dresses are too loose and the fabric of two of the dresses (left, right) is too lightweight. These dresses drown the shape of her body and offer no structure for her frame.
The last dress (right) leans Romantic because of the fabric, ruffles, draping, and red color, which further takes it away from her. She looks very inharmonious.
Structured, narrow, and fitted with waist definition.
These honor her long, narrow frame and prominent bone structure while also honoring her softness.
Overly soft and delicate; overly light fabric; without structure.
These dishonor her structure and in such lines she drowns in fabric or looks completely shapeless. In the overly ornate styles, she looks hard in comparison.
This is Angelina at her best. This long, loose, and tousled yet polished hair is so beautiful on her. This is because this style of hair combines her three essences, Natural (dominant), Classic, and Romantic (less dominant). It has the flow and ease of Naturals, the polish of Romantics, and the simplicity and cleanness of Classics. She looks amazing.
These are not Angelina’s best hairstyles. The bangs in the first look (left) are too ornate and the color is too light for her. There are too many rounded shapes in this hairstyle that’s it’s inharmonious with her.
The last two looks (middle, right) are better than the first, mostly because the darker color is more natural, but they are not her best. In both cases, the hair leans Dramatic and it’s flat and sleeker than is best for her. While she has Dramatic leaning lines, I don’t believe Angelina has a Dramatic essence.
Here we see how important movement is for Angelina. This hair lacks movement and she looks stifled by it. These beehive hairstyles age her. They are very separate from her and the bigger the hair gets, the more it looks like stage hair. It looks stiff and inharmonious.
These are some of Angelina’s least flattering hairstyles. The first look (left) is too light in color for her and the short length and large curls creates a rather ornate look that would be better suited to someone with a purely Romantic essence.
The buzz cut in the middle is too severe on her as it’s too far from her dominant Natural essence. She looks her best when she has long hair that captures the Natural sense of flow and movement. This stye is better suited to someone with a dominant Dramatic essence.
The last look (right) lacks polish. Because of her (less dominant) Romantic essence, Angelina needs polished styling to look her best and she looks disheveled without it.
In the first (left) and middle looks, her makeup is Natural and she looks amazing in the subdued color palettes and subtle, perfectly blended looks. In the third image (right), the makeup is Romantic with the red lip and bold eye. She also looks beautiful in these highlighted features and more shimmery makeup. All of these looks are timeless and classic.
Here we see her in less harmonious makeup. These looks all lean Dramatic and they are too severe on her. In the first (left) and third (right) images, her eye makeup is too intense and that all-around-bold-eyeliner look is very separate from her. Her eyeliner is all I see and it just doesn’t flatter her.
The middle look features a gold lip detail that’s also very separate from her. I believe this was at the premier of the the movie Immortals and that it works in that context of the character, and in that way I think it’s cool and fun.
However, just judging how it sits on her as a person, it really doesn’t work. Her essence is too mature and Natural for this kind of accessory. It would be better suited to someone with a Gamine or Dramatic essence.
Angelina’s leg has broken the internet a few times for good reason. When she whips it out we all can’t help but notice and be in awe. These high-slit, leg-focus dresses are so perfect for her because they draw focus to her tall and powerful frame.
This dress in particular is made from a heavy, structured, fabric that further harmonizes with her bone structure, and the bow and flared train give it drama and make an otherwise subdued design and color palette interesting.
I do wish her hair was a bit more voluminous and polished, it looks rather flat and undone and it doesn’t match the energy of the dress. Outside of that, she looks amazing.
Talk about bringing the drama. I love this look on Angelina. She’s not known for experimenting with color, so when she does it feels like an event and this occasion certainly didn’t disappoint.
I love how this dress fits her, it’s expert construction that contours to her body and I especially love how it cinches at her waist to give her a beautiful shape. The long vertical line is perfect for her structure and the white shoe to match the dress further elongates her vertical line.
Then, of course, there are the red accents of her bag, her lipstick, and the lapel at her breastbone. Even her toenails are red which I think is so cute. I think her hair and make up are the perfect complements to the dress. This is not an outfit, it is an ensemble and it is stunning.
Yes. Just yes. Flamboyant Naturals, especially those that lean strongly Dramatic like Angelina were made for a suit moment and this tuxedo is exceptional. I love how slim the fit is, especially the pants as this plays into that Dramatic-leaning structure.
I also love her hair, it’s big, polished and voluminous which perfectly balances the more Dramatic outfit by playing into her Flamboyant Natural essence. She looks amazing.
I love the draping on this dress. This entire look definitely plays into her Romantic essence from the beautiful draping that cinches her waist to her hair. While Romantic, it is also statuesque with the narrow silhouette and long vertical line and the icy silver color.
This look feels like equal parts Romantic and Dramatic and it’s a good blend for her that brings out another side to her beauty.
Talking of statuesque, this look feels like what would happen if we took the previous look and removed all the Romantic elements. It’s sharp, lean, and sculpted- the fabric itself drapes beautifully, but it gives the impression of being more sculpted and rigid.
Everything together highlights her Dramatic elements and she has a lot of them, so this works beautifully on her and she looks fiercely sexy. This dress definitely makes a statement. I love the simplicity of her hair, makeup and accessories.
I think this is so elegant. The black, the velvet, the draping, the dramatic diamond earrings- every element of this look works together to create a powerful yet subtle figure and Angelina looks simply beautiful.
If I had to type Angelina Jolie, I would say she is a Flamboyant Natural. Although unverified, apparent Kibbe himself did say that she is ‘some sort of Natural’ so that lines up and makes me feel more confident in my findings. I also think she has a Natural, Classic and Romantic essence blend.
I’d love to know what you think. Please let me know if you came to the same conclusion or if you’d type Angelina Jolie differently.
