Do you ever find yourself standing in front of a closet full of clothes without a single thing to wear? Or maybe you find one piece you like, but have no idea what to pair it with for a cohesive outfit? So you end up wearing one of the same five outfits you’ve come to rely on because at least they work.

Chances are you have a lot of clothes, but they aren’t your right clothes, meaning they aren’t true to your best lines, colors, and essences. What you need is to build your authentic forever wardrobe that will encompass all of these things.

Such a wardrobe is built piece by piece and when it’s complete, the greatest feeling is knowing that every piece in your collection goes perfectly with every other piece. When all the lines and colors harmonize, and you can trust that both are your personal best, then dressing becomes as simple and grabbing and going. Never again will you agonize over what to wear, and regardless of what you choose- you’ll look good.

What Is A Forever Wardrobe?

A forever wardrobe is a curated collection of clothes and accessories that you intend to have and enjoy for the rest of your life. These clothes and accessories fully encompass your authentic style so, assuming your size doesn’t change, you can buy them confidently knowing you won’t ever get ‘over’ them.

What Does A Forever Wardrobe Encompass?

By taking into account your body type, your style essence(s), your color season, and your lifestyle.

Body Type:

As defined by the Kibbe system. This lets you know what your best lines and silhouettes, fabrics, and styles are. You can Find Your Kibbe Type by taking the test here.

Style Essence(s):

This elevates your style by animating your personality through style. Do you have a Romantic or Classic essence? Dramatic or Angelic? The answer to this will help you understand what hairstyles, makeup, and accessories best communicate who you are. You can learn about the 7 style essences here.

Color Season:

What are your best colors? Which colors bring you to life and make you shine, and which colors dull that shine? Are too warm or cool? Light or dark? Bright or muted? You can learn about the 4 color seasons here.

Lifestyle:

Where will you be wearing these clothes? Are you always outside getting dirty in the garden? Are most of your days spent at the park or running errands with the kids? Are you a career woman? Do you live on the beach? Are you always out with friends or are you a complete home body who lets herself be dragged out once in a while? Is your climate more wet English countryside or sunny, beachy California?

This is where you personalize your shopping list. A winter coat may not be something you ever need of you live in a tropical climate, etc.

Your clothes have to work for you, not the other way around. So, your forever wardrobe takes all of these factors into account to ensure a collection of couches and accessories that you will use and love.

When you know all this information about your self, it’s time cut the fun part: shopping!

Quality Over Quantity

People sometimes have a strong resistance to paying what they consider a high price in one go for a particular item, but will have no issue spending the same amount over successive trips to buy multiple lesser items. For example, you might buy a pleather coat for $150 and feel god about the purchase even though you know that with constant use, it will last you two seasons at best before you have to replace it.

However, the idea of buying a quality genuine leather coat for $1,000 is too frightening. So, if you continue to buy the cheaper coat every season, in 13 years you’ll exceed the $1,000 you would have spent on the leather coat- and you’ll still need to replace the pleather coat every other season. So, in the long run, which is the point of a forever wardrobe, the investment is always cheaper.

Mindset Shift

Knowing you’re investing in your forever wardrobe means buying the highest quality you can afford. Armed with the knowledge of all the elements that make up your unique personal style, you can do this confidently.

This means waiting to buy the things you absolutely love instead of the thing that’s convenient. Remember that we’re building something to last forever, so you can afford to take your time.

Look for quality materials and craftsmanship and expect to pay for it. This isn’t about breaking the bank or frivolous spending for its own sake, rather it’s a simple acknowledgement that quality costs money. There is an expense associated with sourcing and handling quality materials, and an expense associated with hiring the skilled labor required to turn those materials into the pieces we love. So,  being aware of this and being prepared for it will help you when it comes time to make the necessary investments.

If it’s helpful, think in terms of cost per wear- if a leather coat will last you the rest of your life, then spending $1,000 on it starts to feel reasonable. Higher quality materials and better craftsmanship often means that your item can be repaired, which further extends its lifespan.
